Laboratory of Field and Pasture Forage Production

The laboratory works on:

  • breeding and studying varieties of common vetch, orchard grass, timothy grass, red clover, developing technologies for cultivation;
  • producing seeds of new and rare crops, breeder seeds of annual and perennial grass varieties.

Breeding programs, which were designed by the Laboratory, resulted in the creation of red clover varieties Primorsky 28, Primorsii 14 and Komandor, meadow fescue variety Vostochnaya, smooth bromegrass variety Pervomaii, meadow foxtail variety Rais, redtop variety Zarya, white sweetclover variety Diomid and many others. We developed an effective system of pasture and field forage production in Primorsky krai, created technologies for the cultivation of different perennial and annual grass species, studied the optimal green fodder supply chain in Primorky krai and improved methods for producing seeds of forage crops.

In recent years, the conducted research helped to select winter rye varieties that are suitable for grain and forage harvest and adapted to the conditions of Primorsky krai, and to create promising common vetch hybrids with the potential for breeding a highly productive variety. The researchers of the laboratory obtained experimental data on methods for producing red clover seeds, collected germplasm of perennial grasses (orchard and timothy grasses), and improved technologies for cultivation of winter rye.

Annual grass seeds are also in production. The laboratory provides businesses and local residents with seeds of annual and perennial forage crops for hay meadows, pastures and lawns. We design forage production systems and offer our services to agricultural enterprises.

We published guidelines “The cuktivation and use of eastern galega under the conditions of Primorky krai”, “Growing white sweetclover as a crop for a multipurpose use”, “Technology for the cultivation of sweet sorghum for forage and seed harvest under the conditions of Primorsky krai”.

The laboratory obtained patents on the following inventions: “Method for growing soybean for grain harvest in irrigated soils” (1996), “Method for improving preparation of summer rape seeds” (2015), and the utility model “Silage press” (2013). The researchers of the laboratory were awarded a golden medal “For the breeding and production of seeds of red clover variety Komandor” on the Russian Agro-industrial exhibition “Golden Autumn” in 2012.

A new summer oat variety Pokrov was included in the State Register of Selection Achievements in 2018 (patent No. 9487 dated 02.02.2018).
