About 180-200 potato varieties from our collection nursery are studied in order to select starting breeding material. Annually from 40 to 80 potato varieties are involved in crossing in 60-80 hybrid combinations.
In total, the laboratory created and released 9 potato varieties. Four of them were included in the State Register of Protected Selection Achievements admitted to use in the Russian Federation: Dachnyi, Yantar’, Smak and Kazachok. Varieties Smak and Kazachok were included in the State Register in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
The laboratory produces super-elite seeds of 9 potato varieties: Adretta, Zhukovskii (early), Sante, Udacha, Yantar’, Dachnyi, Smak, Yubilyar and Meteor. Annually the Center produces 60-75 tons of breeder seeds of this class to meet the demand from local agribusinesses.
FSBSI “FSC of Agricultural Biotechnology of the Far East named after A.K. Chaiki” was awarded by the Russian Academy of Agricultural Sciences for the best completed scientific work “Potato variety Yantar’” in 2005. The researchers of the laboratory received a silver medal “For the breeding and seed production of potato variety Yantar’” on the Russian Agro-industrial exhibition “Golden Autumn” in Moscow in 2011, a bronze medal “For the creation of potato variety Dachnyi” in 2013 and a golden medal “For the creation of potato varieties Smak and Kazachok” in 2016 and 2017, respectively.
FSBSI “FSC of Agricultural Biotechnology of the Far East named after A.K. Chaiki” was awarded “the Prize of academician A.K. Chaika” by the united scientific board of FEB RAS in Agricultural Sciences for the series of research works “Ways to improve efficiency of potato production based on the results of breeding work and seed production in FSBSI “PrimSRIA” (reorganized into FSC named after A.K. Chaiki in 2018).
As the result of our breeding work in recent years, a new variety Avgustin was created and included in the State Register of Protected Selection Achievements (patent No. 9476 dated February 1, 2018).
Since 2011, scientists of the laboratory have been conducting research on the technology for the cultivation and storage of potato seeds to improve the storage quality of tubers. The quality of the obtained seed material is evaluated according to the requirements of the standard GOST.
Three arch-shaped spring-and-summer greenhouses with an area of 780 m2 were built recently. This allows producing up to 60 thousand tons of potato mini-tubers of 16 different varieties: Zhukovskii (early), Impala, Latona, Sante, Smak, Meteor, Yubilyar, Yantar’ and others. The obtained mini-tubers are valuable seed material, which is used not only for further propagation and production of super-super-elite seeds, but also for direct sale to local customers.
Center for shared use of research equipment “Bioresource collection” was sep up within FSBSI “FSC of Agricultural Biotechnology of the Far East named after A.K. Chaiki” in 2017.
